40 Years of Silence: An Indonesian Tragedy

Okay kiddo, let me explain this to you in a way that's easy to understand. So, first of all, do you know what a tragedy is? It's when something really bad happens and lots of people are hurt and sad because of it.

Now, let's talk about Indonesia. It's a country in Asia and lots of people live there. But a long time ago, for 40 years, there was something really sad that happened and nobody really talked about it. That's why it's called "40 years of silence".

What happened was that a group of people in Indonesia wanted to have their own separate country. They were called the PKI or the Communist Party of Indonesia. But the government didn't like that idea and they thought it was a threat to their power. So, they did something really bad - they started punishing people who supported the PKI, even if they didn't do anything wrong. This was called a "witch hunt".

Lots of people were arrested, tortured, or even killed just because they were suspected of supporting the PKI. Families were separated and some people went into hiding just to stay safe. It was a really scary time for a lot of people.

But why was it a secret? Well, the government didn't want anyone to know what they were doing. They didn't want other countries to find out and judge them for it. So, they kept it all quiet.

It wasn't until years later, when a documentary was made, that people started to talk about what happened during those 40 years. It was a really sad time in Indonesia's history, and it's important to remember it so that we can make sure something like that never happens again.
