ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

45,X/46,XY mosaicism

Ok kiddo, so you know how we all have genes that make us who we are, right? Well, sometimes there's a mix-up when those genes are being made.

Normally, girls have two X chromosomes and boys have an X and a Y chromosome. But with 45,x/46,xy mosaicism, some people have a mix of both. Instead of having two X chromosomes or an X and a Y chromosome in all of their cells, some of their cells have only one X chromosome (called 45,X) and some of their cells have an X and a Y chromosome (called 46,XY).

This can happen when a cell divides and the chromosomes don't split up the way they're supposed to. So some of the new cells have one X chromosome and some have an X and a Y.

This can cause some differences in how a person's body develops. Some parts of their body might develop more like a typical girl and some might develop more like a typical boy. It can also cause some health problems, like infertility or kidney issues.

But no matter what, everyone with 45,x/46,xy mosaicism is still unique and special in their own way!
