ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

46,XX/46,XY

Okay kiddo, let me explain this to you. Everyone is born with either XX chromosomes or XY chromosomes. The X and Y chromosomes are what determine whether someone is a girl or a boy. Usually, girls have two X chromosomes and boys have one X and one Y chromosome.

However, sometimes things can be a little different. Sometimes a person can have a mix of XX and XY chromosomes, which is what 46,xx/46,xy means. This is called a chromosomal mosaicism. It means that some cells in the body have XX chromosomes and some cells have XY chromosomes.

This can happen for different reasons, but it usually happens by chance during the development of the baby. But it's important to remember that no matter what chromosomes someone has, everyone is still a unique and special person, with their own thoughts and feelings.
