ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

A Boy and His Atom

Okay kiddo, have you ever heard of atoms before? They are tiny, tiny, teeny, tiny, itty bitty things that make up everything in the world, even you and me! But, they're too small to see with our eyes or even with a regular microscope.

But, some really smart grown-ups figured out a way to see atoms using a big machine called a scanning tunneling microscope (STM). With this microscope, they can see atoms and even move them around!

In 2013, some grown-ups decided to have some fun with the STM and play a game. They moved around a few atoms to make a little picture of a boy and his atom. It was like playing with really, really small legos!

The picture was made up of just a few atoms and it was so small that you couldn't even see it without the microscope. It was a really cool experiment to show how we can use technology to explore things that are too small for us to see with our eyes.
