ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

A Man Without Words

Sometimes people have trouble using words to talk to others, just like when you're playing a game and can't find the right words to explain how to play to your friend. But some people have a really hard time talking and understanding words, even when they really want to. This can happen when they have something called autism or a developmental disability.

There was a man named Tito who couldn't use words to talk to other people, but instead he used something called typing. Tito would type on a machine and the words would come up on the screen. This helped Tito say what he wanted to say without using his voice. He was able to tell people about the things he liked and the things he didn't like, just like you tell your friends what you like to do.

Tito's way of communicating is called "facilitated communication" because he needed someone to help him type at first. A facilitator would hold his arm or hand and help guide him to the keys. Tito would think about what he wanted to say and type it out on the machine.

It's important to remember that just because someone doesn't use words doesn't mean they don't have thoughts and feelings, just like you do. Different people use different ways to communicate, but everyone deserves to be heard and understood.
