In the year 1836, many people in the United States believed that slavery was wrong, and that all people should be free. One group of people who believed this very strongly were called abolitionists. They wanted to end slavery and make it against the law for people to own other people as slaves.
But not everyone agreed with the abolitionists. Some people actually liked having slaves because it meant that they could have other people do things for them without having to pay them. These people were called slave-owners.
In the city of Boston, Massachusetts, there was a group of abolitionists who were very vocal about their beliefs. They would write and speak about the need to end slavery, and many people listened to them and agreed.
However, there were also many slave-owners in Boston who did not like the abolitionists’ ideas. They thought that the abolitionists were interfering with their way of life and trying to take away their property.
One day, a group of abolitionists gathered in Boston to protest against a man named Charles G. Greene. Greene was a slave-owner who had come to Boston to retrieve a slave girl who had run away from his plantation. The abolitionists did not want to let Greene take the girl back, and so they began to protest loudly.
As the protest continued, it turned into a full-blown riot. The abolitionists and the slave-owners began to fight each other in the streets. Buildings were set on fire, and people were injured.
Eventually, the police were called in to stop the riot. Many people were arrested, but the abolitionists’ message continued to spread. Over time, more and more people came to believe that slavery was wrong, and eventually, slavery was made illegal in the United States.
So even though the abolition riot of 1836 was a scary and violent event, it helped to shed light on an important issue, and it played a small part in bringing about positive change in the world.
