ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Academic publishing

Have you ever drawn a picture or written a story and wanted to show it to everyone you know? Well, academics (which means smart people who do research and teach at universities) also want to share their ideas and research with other people. But instead of showing it to just a few friends, they want to show it to people all around the world!

Academic publishing is a way that academics share their research and ideas with the world. When an academic wants to share their work, they write it all down in a big document called a manuscript. This manuscript can be really long, like a book, or it can be shorter, like an essay.

Once the manuscript is finished, the academic sends it to a publisher. The publisher is like a company that helps the academic turn their manuscript into a book or an article that people can read. The publisher has people who check the manuscript to make sure it makes sense and is written well. They also make sure the academic did the research correctly and followed all the rules.

After the manuscript is checked, the publisher prints the book or article and sends it out to people who want to read it. These people might be other academics who are interested in the same topic, or they might be regular people who want to learn something new.

Academic publishing is really important because it allows people all over the world to learn about new ideas and research. It also helps academics get recognized for their hard work and can help them get jobs and promotions. Without academic publishing, we wouldn't be able to learn as much about the world and the people who study it.
