ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Academic standards

Academic standards are like a map that tells us what we need to learn and how we need to learn it. Think about it like playing a game. When we play a game, there are rules we have to follow in order to win. Academic standards are like those rules that we need to follow in order to do well in school.

These standards tell us what we need to know in different subjects like math, English, and science. They also tell us how well we should know these things at different grade levels. For example, one academic standard for math might be that students should be able to add and subtract by the end of second grade. Another might be that they should be able to multiply and divide by the end of third grade.

So, academic standards help teachers know what to teach and when to teach it. They also help students know what they need to learn and what they should be focusing on in each subject. When we follow these standards and learn what we are supposed to, it helps us do well in school and be prepared for the future.
