ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Access Point Name

An Access Point Name (APN) is like a secret code that your phone or tablet uses to connect to the internet on a specific mobile network, like Verizon, AT&T, or T-Mobile. It's like a special address that lets your device communicate with the network to get internet service.

When you use a mobile device to connect to the internet, you need to have both a SIM card and an APN. The SIM card identifies you as a customer of the mobile network, while the APN tells the network who you are and which data plan you have. It's important to have the correct APN settings in your device to be able to get internet access on your mobile network.

Think of it like a secret handshake: your device needs to know the right way to say "hello" to the network in order to get online. And just like with a secret handshake, if you don't get it right, the network won't let you in!
