ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Accismus

Accismus is when you pretend that you don't want something, but actually you do. It's like saying "no thank you" to a piece of cake, but secretly you really want it.

Imagine your mom offers you a cookie before dinner. You know you should eat your vegetables first, but you really want the cookie. So you say, "No thanks, I don't want a cookie anyway." Even though deep down you really do!

Accismus is a fancy word for this pretending game that people play, especially when they want to appear humble or polite. Sometimes we use it to avoid looking greedy or selfish.

But really, it's okay to admit you want something if you do! Being honest is important. Just try to balance it out by making good choices and being polite.
