Achievement gaps in the United States

Okay, so imagine you and your friend have a race. But your friend started earlier than you, so they're already ahead. That's kind of what an achievement gap is. In the United States, some groups of people, like Black and Latino students, start with less opportunities and resources than white students. This means they often do not do as well in school as white students.

For example, some schools don't have as much money to spend on things like teachers and books, so those students might not get the best education. Also, some students might have to work after school, so they don't have enough time to do their homework or study for tests. All of these things can make it harder for some students to be as successful in school as others.

A lot of people are trying to figure out how to help close these gaps. Some schools are trying to provide more resources to these students, like after-school tutoring or mentorship programs. Some programs are trying to help families afford things like school supplies or internet access. And some people are working to change policies that make things harder for certain groups of people.

It's important to remember that all kids have the potential to do great things, but they might need a little extra help and support along the way. By working together, we can help make sure everyone has a fair shot at success in school and in life.
