Acid-base extraction

Hi there! So, do you know what acid and base are? Acid is something sour like lemon juice and base is like soap. Now, let's talk about acid-base extraction.

Imagine we have a mixture of things (like a little bit of salt, sugar, and sand) and we want to separate them. We can use acid-base extraction to do that!

We start by adding a liquid to our mixture, which is usually water. Then, we add something that is either an acid or a base. This will change the properties of our mixture. The acid will make it acidic (like a lemon) and the base will make it basic (like soap).

Now, some of the things in the mixture will like the acidic or basic environment and some won't. So, we can take advantage of that! We can carefully pour out the acidic or basic liquid from the mixture and leave behind the things that didn't react to it.

For example, let's say the salt we added to our mixture likes to dissolve in the acidic liquid. We pour out the acidic liquid and the salt will come with it, leaving the sugar and sand behind!

See, that wasn't too hard, was it? Acid-base extraction is just a way to separate things using acids and bases.
