Acrotelm

Okay kiddo, sit down and let's talk about acrotelm. Do you know what a bog is? It's a wetland that has a lot of water and moss on top, and sometimes you can even see some plants growing there!

Well, the top layer of the bog, where the plants grow and where it's wettest, is called the acrotelm. It's like the hat of the bog, protecting everything underneath it. This layer is very important for the plants and animals that live in the bog, because it's where they get their food and water.

The acrotelm can change depending on the weather, becoming more or less wet. When it's dry, the plants can't get as much water and they might even die! But when it's too wet, the plants might not get enough oxygen to breathe and they might die too!

So people who study bogs are very interested in the acrotelm because it's so important for all the living things there. But remember, it's just the hat of the bog!
