Adequate equivalence relation

An equivalence relation is like a way of comparing things that are similar to each other.

For example, let's say we have some fruits: apples, bananas, and oranges.

We can use an equivalence relation to group the fruits based on their color.

So all the red apples, yellow bananas, and orange oranges would be in the same group because they are all similar in color.

But what if we also had green apples? Those would not be in the same group as the red apples because they are not the same color.

An adequate equivalence relation is a way of comparing things that groups all the things together that are truly similar, and doesn't group together things that are different in some way.

So in our fruit example, an adequate equivalence relation would only group together fruits that are the same color and not group together fruits that are a different color, even if they're both apples.

This helps us to better understand and compare things based on their true similarities.
