ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Adipokine

An adipokine is a special type of protein that is made by the fat cells in our body. These proteins can do different things, like talk to other cells in the body or help control how much fat is stored in our bodies.

Think of the adipokines like messengers in a castle. The fat cells are like the castle and they send out these messengers (adipokines) to go tell other parts of the body what to do. They might tell some cells to stop storing too much fat or to start burning fat for energy.

Even though these messengers are made by our fat cells, they aren't just there to help us store fat. Sometimes they can also help protect us from getting sick or help us fight off infections. So, although our fat cells might seem like they are just there to hold onto extra weight, they are actually pretty important in our overall health.
