African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty

Okay kiddo, so there are some places in the world where countries have signed a special agreement called a treaty that says they promise not to make, test or have nuclear weapons . That means that they will only use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, like making electricity.

The African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty is one of these agreements that countries in Africa signed together in the year 1996. It is also called the Pelindaba Treaty, because that’s where the agreement was signed, at a place called Pelindaba in South Africa.

This treaty was a way to help make sure that nuclear weapons are not used in Africa, because they can be really dangerous and harmful. The treaty also helps to prevent other countries from bringing nuclear weapons into Africa, as well as stopping African countries from getting involved in nuclear weapons programmes.

Overall, the African Nuclear-Weapon-Free Zone Treaty is an important promise that African countries made to each other, to work for peace and safety in the region.
