Afro-Puerto Ricans are people who have roots in both Africa and Puerto Rico. They have ancestors who were brought to Puerto Rico from Africa as slaves in the 1700s and 1800s. Many of them have dark skin, curly hair, and cultures that combine the African and Puerto Rican culture. Every year, they celebrate their culture and heritage during events like Carnaval or "Carnaval de Negritud," which honors their African roots, or the Kumbia festival, which celebrates African-Caribbean music. Afro-Puerto Ricans are an important part of Puerto Rican culture.
