ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Air separation

Do you know that the air we breathe is not just one thing? It's actually made up of different gases like oxygen, nitrogen, and others. Air separation is when we take these different gases apart from each other. This is done because some gases are more useful than others for things like medical purposes, making steel, or even for putting into your car tire.

Imagine you have a bag of different color crayons, and you want to separate them into piles based on color. That's sort of what happens with air separation. The process uses big machines, called air separation units, to separate the different gases in the air. These machines work sort of like big strainers, filtering out the gases so we can have just the ones we want.

Once the gases are separated, they can be put into different containers or used for different things. Oxygen, for example, is really important for helping people who have trouble breathing, like when someone is in a hospital. Nitrogen is used to make things like fertilizer for growing plants, and helium is used for things like balloons.

So air separation is basically when we take air, which is made up of different gases, and separate out the ones we want to use for different things. It's like sorting crayons by color to use for different art projects!
