ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Air-fuel ratio

Air-fuel ratio is like making a sandwich. You need bread and filling to make a tasty sandwich. In the same way, engines need air and fuel to run. The air is like the bread and the fuel is like the filling.

However, just like you can't put too much filling in a sandwich as it will be hard to eat, you can't put too much fuel in an engine. It will not run properly and might even cause damage.

So, air-fuel ratio is like trying to find the perfect balance between the amount of air and fuel that goes into the engine. If you have too much air and not enough fuel, the engine might run very lean and not produce enough power.

On the other hand, if you have too much fuel and not enough air, the engine might run too rich and produce too much pollution.

In summary, air-fuel ratio is about finding the perfect balance of air and fuel for an engine to run smoothly and efficiently, just like finding the perfect balance of bread and filling for a yummy sandwich.
