Akonting

The akonting is a very special wooden instrument that people from the Jola tribe in West Africa like to play. It looks a bit like a guitar, but it has a very unique shape, with a long neck and a round body.

To make sounds with the akonting, the musician has to pluck the strings that run along the long neck of the instrument. These strings are made of animal gut, which is like a special kind of string made from animal intestines.

When a person plucks the strings, they can make all kinds of different sounds. Some sounds are high-pitched and sharp, while other sounds are low and smooth. The musician can use their fingers to press down on the strings at different places on the neck of the akonting to make even more different sounds.

The akonting is very important to the people of the Jola tribe, because it is not just a musical instrument - it is also a symbol of their history and culture. When people play the akonting, they can tell stories about their ancestors and their traditions, and they can share the music that has been passed down through generations of Jola people.
