Alcohol prohibition in India

Alright kiddo, so a long time ago in India, some grown-ups thought that drinking alcohol was a bad thing. So they made a rule that no one was allowed to make, sell or buy any alcohol in the whole country. They called it "alcohol prohibition".

This rule started in the year 1951 and lasted for a long time, until some other grown-ups decided that it wasn't working very well. You see, even though there was a rule against it, some people still wanted to drink alcohol. So they started making their own alcohol in secret - this is called "bootlegging".

Bootlegging was a big problem because the alcohol wasn't made in a safe way and sometimes people got sick or died from drinking it. On top of that, the government lost a lot of money because they couldn't tax the alcohol that people were making in secret.

Finally, in the year 1990, the grown-ups in charge decided to lift the rule and allow people to drink alcohol again. But don't worry, kiddo. Just because it's legal to drink now doesn't mean you should go out and do it. Drinking alcohol is something that grown-ups do responsibly and in moderation. Got it?
