ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Aleksei N. Leontiev

Aleksei N. Leontiev was a Russian psychologist who was born in 1903. He was very interested in studying how people learn and how their everyday activities are related to their development as individuals. He proposed the idea that learning happens when you participate in an activity that is meaningful to you, like playing with a toy or solving a puzzle. This idea is called Activity Theory. Leontiev believed that people are more likely to learn and grow when they have the freedom to make their own decisions and explore their own interests. When children are given the opportunity to act on their own ideas and interests, they become stronger and more creative. This was an important part of his work and helped him to create some of the ideas of modern developmental psychology.
