ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Algebra

Algebra is a type of math that uses numbers and symbols (like letters) to figure out equations. Equations are just ways of saying that two things are equal. For example, if I said that 4 + 4 = 8, that would be an equation.

In algebra, we use letters like x or y to represent unknown numbers. So I could say that x + 4 = 8. This means that if I can figure out what number x is, then I will have figured out the equation. To figure out x, I can subtract 4 from both sides of the equation, which would leave me with just x = 4. That means that x is equal to 4, so x + 4 = 8.
