ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Alkyne

Alkynes are molecules that are made up of carbon and hydrogen atoms. They have a special type of bond between the carbon atoms called a triple bond, which means that the carbon atoms are sharing not one, but three pairs of electrons.

Think of it this way: imagine you and a friend each have a toy ball. When you share the ball with your friend, you’re only sharing one ball. But if you both held onto the ball tightly and shared three balls between you, that would be like the triple bond in an alkyne.

The triple bond makes alkynes very strong and stable. It also means that they can be used in a lot of different chemical reactions. For example, they can be used to make more complex molecules or to form new carbon-carbon bonds.

Overall, alkynes are a cool type of molecule that scientists can use to make all sorts of interesting things.
