ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Allen's rule

Ok kiddo, do you know how some animals have really big ears or long legs and some have small ears or short legs? Well, Allen's rule is a special rule that explains why that happens.

It says that animals that live in cold places like the North Pole or the top of a mountain, have shorter arms, legs, and tails, and smaller ears and noses than animals that live in warm places like Africa or the Amazon jungle.

That's because when it's cold, animals need to stay warm, and having small appendages and body parts helps them do that. It’s like wearing mittens and a hat during winter to keep your hands and head warm.

On the other hand, animals that live in warm places need big ears, long legs, and other large appendages to help them cool off because they need to release heat from their bodies.

So that’s Allen’s rule! Animals adjust their bodies to survive in different climates. Cool, isn’t it?
