ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Allergic shiner

Allergic shiner is when someone has dark circles under their eyes because they have allergies. When you have allergies, your body reacts to things like pollen, dust, or pet dander as if they were really bad germs. This makes your body produce a chemical called histamine. Histamine can make your eyes and nose get really itchy and runny.

Sometimes, when your body produces too much histamine, the blood vessels under your eyes can get bigger, which makes the skin there look darker. This can make it seem like you have a black eye or a dark shadow under your eyes. That's called an allergic shiner. It's kind of like when you get tired and your eyes look puffy and dark, but instead of being tired, it's allergies making your eyes look that way.

The good news is that allergic shiners usually go away once your allergies get better. This can happen on its own or with the help of things like allergy medicine or avoiding the things that make your allergies worse. You might also hear people call allergic shiners "allergy eyes" or "allergic conjunctivitis," but they all mean the same thing: dark circles under your eyes because of allergies.
