ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Allomone

An allomone is like a special smell or chemical that some living things produce to communicate with other living things.

Just like how we might use words or gestures to tell someone something, animals and plants use allomones to send messages to other animals or insects. For example, a skunk will release a smelly allomone to warn other animals to stay away.

Some allomones are used to attract other living things, like when flowers use sweet smells to attract bees for pollination. Others are used to scare away predators or even trick other animals into doing something that benefits the living thing producing the allomone.

So, an allomone is really just a special chemical or smell that animals and plants use to communicate in their own special way.
