ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Almajiri

An almajiri is a young boy in some parts of Africa, particularly Nigeria, who leaves his family and goes to live with a religious teacher to learn about Islam.

So, let's say you live in a village in Nigeria and your family is Muslim. As a young boy, you may decide that you want to learn even more about Islam and become really good at it. To do this, you might choose to become an almajiri.

This means that you would leave your family and go to live with a teacher who is also Muslim. This teacher will teach you all about Islam, including how to read and write in Arabic. You will also learn about other important things like respecting your parents and being kind to others.

While you are living with the teacher, you will also work for him in his house or help him with chores. This is to show your respect and gratitude for his teachings.

Being an almajiri can be very tough because you are away from your family and you have to work hard. But many boys choose to become almajiris because they believe that this is the best way to learn about Islam and become a good person.

Overall, the almajiri system is a way for young boys to continue learning about their religion and culture in a more hands-on and personal way.
