ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Alternative civilian service

Imagine you are playing with your toys, and your mom asks you to help her pack her bags for a trip. But you don't want to do it. However, you know it's essential, so you suggest you clean your room instead. That is what Alternative Civilian Service is about.

In some countries, when young people (usually men) turn 18, they have to serve in the military for a certain period in case of a war or emergency. But some people don't want to participate in the armed forces because of their beliefs or other reasons.

So, the government gives these people an alternative way to serve their country without joining the military. Instead, they can do Alternative Civilian Service, which means they can work in public institutions or organizations that help the community.

For example, if there is a flood, volunteers might be needed to help fill sandbags or distribute relief Material like clothes or food to those affected. Or, if people are sick or injured, volunteers can help by assisting medical professionals or working in hospitals.

Alternative Civilian Service allows people who are against fighting or prefer peaceful solutions to contribute to their country in a way that aligns with their beliefs.
