Alternative currency are forms of money or payment systems that exist outside of traditional currency, like the US dollar, euro or Canadian dollar. They are usually created to offer more choice in the payment system, and are usually offered in digital form. For example, cryptocurrencies, like Bitcoin, are a form of alternative currency. Cryptocurrencies are digital coins that are created by computers using a process called "mining". Every time a new cryptocurrency is mined, it is added to the list of alternative currencies that people can use to buy goods and services. They can also be traded on cryptocurrency exchanges for other digital currencies or for traditional money.
