Ama (diving)

AMA diving is when people dive underwater in Japan with a special breathing technique using a tube called a "one-way valve." They hold their breath and dive down to catch shellfish and seaweed. The word "ama" means "sea woman" in Japanese, and these divers are often women who have been diving for many years. They wear a special outfit that helps keep them warm and protects their skin from the water. They use special tools to collect things from the bottom of the sea, like a net or a knife. It's important for them to be able to hold their breath for a long time so they can stay underwater and collect as much as they can before coming back up to the surface. AMA diving is a traditional practice in Japan that has been around for hundreds of years, and it requires a lot of skill and practice to be able to do it safely.
