Ambulatory Payment Classification

Ambulatory Payment Classification (APC) is a system that classifies hospital-based services into “groups” of similar services. It assigns a specific payment rate (or amount of money) for each group of services. It is used by Medicare and Medicaid for hospital outpatient services, such as doctor’s office visits. In other words, it is a way for hospitals to be paid for the services they provide.
