American Literature (academic discipline)

American literature is a type of literature written by American authors (people who live in the United States). It includes stories, poems, novels, and essays that talk about the history, culture, and people of America. American literature often uses themes and characters to explore big ideas and thoughts about life, freedom, and justice. Many of the books that are considered classic literature today were written by American authors.
