American System (economic plan)

The American System is an economic plan which was used in the United States in the 1800s. It encouraged industries to produce goods for American citizens, rather than just importing them from other countries. The idea was to create more jobs for Americans and to build the economy of the United States. The American System involved setting up protective tariffs, or taxes, on imported goods which would make them more expensive and encourage people to buy products made in the U.S. It also included the building of new roads, canals and other infrastructure to help link the parts of the country together, as well as creating banking systems to help people save and borrow money. Finally, land was given to new citizens of the US and Native American tribes so that they could grow food and set up their own farms. This would help make sure everyone had enough to eat, and also provide more jobs for people.
