ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

American cheetah

The American cheetah is actually not a type of cheetah that is living now, but rather a type of big cat that lived a long time ago! It's kind of like if you had a really big great-great-great-grandparent who was a totally different person than anyone in your family now.

The American cheetah looked kind of like a regular cheetah you might see today, but bigger and with long, skinny legs that made it very fast. It wasn't actually related to modern-day cheetahs though, even though they looked similar. Scientists think that maybe the American cheetah was more similar to something called a puma, which is another big cat.

Sadly, the American cheetah went extinct a long time ago. This means that there are no more American cheetahs left in the world. But scientists can still learn a lot about them by studying their fossils, which are like really old bones that are left behind after an animal dies.
