ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Amplitude distortion

Hey kiddo! Have you ever heard of sound waves? They are the vibrations that travel through the air and make all the noises you hear around you. When you imagine sound waves, think of them like waves in the ocean. Just like each wave in the ocean has a height, sound waves have a height too! That height is called amplitude.

Now, sometimes the sound you hear might sound weird or different. That's because sometimes there can be something that changes the height of the sound waves! When this happens, we call it amplitude distortion.

Think of it like this. Imagine you have a toy car and you press down really hard on the top of the car. When you do that, the car gets squished and its shape changes. It might not work as well as it did before, right? That's kind of what happens to sound waves when there is amplitude distortion. Something is pressing down on the sound and making it sound different from how it originally sounded.

There are different things that can cause amplitude distortion, like using a microphone that is too close to a speaker or having a problem with the electrical equipment that is sending the sound waves out. But don't worry, we can fix amplitude distortion by finding the problem and fixing it. Then, the sound waves can travel perfectly through the air once again!
