ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Anaphylatoxin

Anaphylatoxins are tiny things that can cause some people's bodies to go into alert mode even though there isn't anything really bad happening. Imagine your body is like a superhero always trying to save you from danger. Anaphylatoxins can make your superhero think there's danger when there's really just a little thing that won't actually hurt you, like a peanut or bee sting.

When your superhero thinks there's danger, it starts to do a lot of stuff to try and help you, even if you don't really need all that help. This can make you feel really sick and uncomfortable, like when you have a bad cold. Some people's superheroes take this even further and go into overdrive, which can actually make them very very sick and even stop their superpowers (like breathing and heart beating) from working correctly.

But don't worry, doctors know how to help people whose superheroes get confused by anaphylatoxins. They might give them special medicine that helps them calm down or stay away from things that trigger their superhero. So next time you hear about anaphylatoxins, just remember they are tiny things that can make some people's superheroes think they need to save the day, but there are ways to help!
