ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Ancient South Arabian script

Imagine you are learning a new language like when you started learning English letters. A long, long time ago, in a place called South Arabia, people also had a way of writing their language. This was called the Ancient South Arabian Script.

Just like our English letters, their letters were also symbols that represented sounds in their language. The ASAS letters looked more squiggly than English letters, and some of them were even written from right to left instead of left to right!

The people who used ASAS would carve these symbols onto rocks or inscribe them onto objects made of metal or clay. This was how they communicated important information and shared stories with each other.

It's exciting to think that a long time ago, there were different ways of writing that helped people keep in touch with each other and learn new things. Even today, we still look at old ASAS inscriptions to learn more about the people who used the script and the world around them.
