So, you know how when you get sick, you might go to the doctor and they take a little bit of your blood or maybe some cells and try to figure out what made you sick so they can help you feel better? Well, scientists can do the same thing with really, really old skeletons or other ancient things that might have had germs or viruses that made people sick a long time ago.
They use something called genomics, which is like looking at a map of all the different parts that make up a living thing- kind of like how you can look at a map of your neighborhood and see all the different streets and houses. And when scientists look at this map for really old germs or viruses, they can see how they've changed over time, which can help them learn more about how they make people sick and how people might have been affected by them in the past.
It's kind of like solving a mystery- the scientists are like detectives, trying to figure out what happened a long time ago using little clues they find in the germs and everybody's bones or wherever else they look. It's pretty cool, right?
