Anglo-Saxon runes

Anglo-Saxon runes are kind of like letters in a secret code that some people used a long time ago in England. They look kind of like stick figures or squiggles that people drew on rocks, wood, and other things to communicate with each other.

Each of the rune letters stood for a different sound in the words they used. For example, the rune that looks like a "P" was called "Peorð" and it stood for the "p" sound. To write a message, people would draw a series of these rune letters and add little lines and dots to change the sounds or meanings.

People who knew how to read and write in Anglo-Saxon runes were considered very smart and important because they could read secret messages and write stories and religious texts. Nowadays we don't really use Anglo-Saxon runes very much, but we can learn about them to understand the history and culture of people who lived a long time ago.
