ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Animal testing

Hey there little buddy, so you know how sometimes we try to figure out if things are safe for us to use? Like if we eat some food, we want to make sure it won't make us sick. Well, sometimes science people use animals to test things to make sure they are safe for us humans to use.

For example, if they want to make a new medicine to help us feel better, they might try it out on a mouse to see if it makes the mouse sick or not. If it doesn't make the mouse sick, then they might try it on a bigger animal like a rabbit or dog. They keep trying out the medicine on different animals to make sure it won't harm us humans when we use it.

Now, some people think testing on animals is good because it helps keep us safe. And some people think it's not fair to the animals because they might get hurt or sick from the testing. Scientists try to be very careful and make sure the animals are treated well and not hurt too much.

In the end, it's an important thing to think about and decide what's the best way to make sure we are safe without hurting the animals too much.
