ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Annuit cœptis

Okay kiddo, so you know how money is really important for buying things we need and want, right? Well, sometimes people want to make sure they have enough money for when they're older and not working anymore. One way they do this is by putting money into something called an annuity.

An annuity is like a special savings account where you put in a certain amount of money every year. Then, when you're older and ready to retire, the annuity gives you back that money plus some extra money that grew over time.

Now, "annuit cœptis" is a Latin phrase that means "he approves (or favors) our undertakings." It's actually printed on the back of the one dollar bill in the United States! It was chosen by the people who designed the dollar bill to show that they believed that a higher power (like a god or spirit) was guiding and helping them with their important task of creating money for the country.

So, annuit cœptis doesn't have anything directly to do with annuities or saving money for retirement. It's just a fancy phrase on the dollar bill that reminds us that we can ask for help and guidance from something bigger than ourselves when we're doing something important. Pretty cool, huh?
