ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Anson Burlingame

Anson Burlingame was a man who lived a long time ago in the 1800s. He was born in Massachusetts and became a lawyer. He really cared about making sure that people were treated fairly and equally.

When he got older, Anson Burlingame became a politician and got elected to be a member of the U.S. Congress. There, he worked hard to pass laws that would help people who were being treated unfairly. He especially cared about helping people who came to America from other countries and making sure they were treated nicely.

Later, he even became the United States Ambassador (which is like America's special friend to another country) to China. He wanted to help make friends between America and China, because sometimes countries can fight and be mean to each other. Anson Burlingame did a really good job at being a friendly and fair friend to China.

People still remember Anson Burlingame today because he was a kind person who worked hard to help others.
