ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Anti-mask law

Okay kiddo, so some people wear masks to cover their faces. Sometimes they wear them to protect themselves from germs but sometimes they wear them to hide their identity.

In some places, there are laws that say you can't wear a mask in public if you are trying to hide who you are. This is because if someone does something bad, like break the law or hurt somebody, it's important that they can be identified so they can be held accountable for what they did.

But sometimes, during protests or demonstrations, people wear masks to block tear gas or to show their support for a cause without being recognized. So, in those situations, it can be okay to wear a mask.

The anti-mask law is controversial because some people feel like it's taking away their right to free speech or expression. But others feel like it's important to know who's who when things get out of control.

It's a tricky issue, but it's important to remember that there are reasons why these laws exist and we should try to understand why they were made before we decide if we agree with them or not.
