Anticholinergic is a big word used to describe some medicines or substances which block the actions of a chemical called acetylcholine, which helps our body to function normally. Acetylcholine helps our muscles move, our heart beat, our digestive system work and our brain to think and remember. When some medicines or substances stop acetylcholine from doing its job, they can make some things in our body not work properly.
This can cause side effects like dry mouth, watery eyes, constipation, dizziness, confusion, or difficulty urinating. Think of anticholinergic as like putting a hand over your mouth and not letting you talk, causing you to feel a bit frustrated and uncomfortable.
So, we need to be careful with medicines or substances that are anticholinergic, and only use them when our doctor tells us to, and only in the way our doctor tells us to use them.
