ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Apertium

Apertium is like a talking dictionary, but instead of just telling you what words mean, it helps computers understand different languages and translate words and sentences from one language to another.

Just like you learn words and grammar rules to be able to speak a language, computers also need to learn these rules and patterns. Apertium's job is to teach the computer how different languages work, like how they form different tenses and how words change depending on their position in a sentence.

Once the computer has learned these rules, it can take a sentence in one language, like Spanish, and figure out what it means. Then it can translate the sentence into another language, like English, using its knowledge of how both languages work.

Apertium is especially helpful for people who need to communicate with others who speak different languages, like when you go on vacation or talk to someone from a different country online. With Apertium's help, computers can understand and translate words and sentences, making it easier for people from different places to talk to each other!
