ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Apparent-time hypothesis

The apparent-time hypothesis is like when you see your mommy's face in the morning and think she looks tired, but when you see her at night she looks less tired. It means that people's language changes over time because they hear the people around them speaking differently. So, if you ask someone who is 5 years old to say a word, they might say it differently than someone who is 50 years old because the way people talk changes over time. This is the idea behind the apparent-time hypothesis, which looks at how people speak and how their language changes over time.
