Archimedes' screw

Imagine you are trying to move water from a low place (such as a river) to a high place (such as a farm field). This can be really hard work if you have to carry lots of buckets of water up a steep hill!

However, Archimedes, a really smart man from a long time ago, came up with a way to make this job easier. He invented what is called an "Archimedes' screw."

An Archimedes' screw looks like a big tube with a spiral inside. It works like this: the bottom of the tube is put into the water, and then the whole tube is turned. As the tube turns, the spiral inside the tube scoops up the water and carries it up the tube.

Once the water reaches the top of the tube, it can be dumped out into a container or onto a field, where it is needed. And the best part is, you don't have to do any hard work carrying buckets of water up a steep hill!

So, an Archimedes' screw is just a fancy tool that helps move water from a low place to a high place, making work a whole lot easier.
