They need a material that is selective, which means it can separate oxygen from other gases in the water. They also need a material that doesn't let water in, which would be bad for us because we would drown if water gets into our lungs.

It's a really complicated process, and scientists are still figuring out how to make it practical and safe for people to use. But if they can make it work, it would be really cool to have the ability to breathe underwater like fish!
