Artificial gills (human)

Okay kiddo, have you ever been swimming and wanted to stay underwater for a longer time? Well, scientists are trying to make something that can help us stay underwater for a long, long time without needing air from the surface. They call it "artificial gills".

You know how fish can breathe underwater through their gills, right? Artificial gills work kind of like that, but for humans. These gills would allow people to breathe underwater by extracting oxygen from the water like fish do. This would be really helpful for scuba divers, researchers, or anyone who wants to explore the ocean without having to come up for air all the time.

To create these artificial gills, scientists are trying to find materials that can act like gills and filter the oxygen from the water. They need a material that is selective, which means it can separate oxygen from other gases in the water. They also need a material that doesn't let water in, which would be bad for us because we would drown if water gets into our lungs.

It's a really complicated process, and scientists are still figuring out how to make it practical and safe for people to use. But if they can make it work, it would be really cool to have the ability to breathe underwater like fish!
