ELI5: Explain Like I'm 5

Aspect ratio (image)

Okay kiddo, have you ever looked at a picture on your phone or maybe on the TV and noticed that sometimes it looks really wide and sometimes it looks like a rectangle? That's because of something called "aspect ratio" which means how wide and tall the picture is.

Think of it like this - imagine you have a piece of paper - if you draw a really big picture on it that goes all the way to the edges, it will be really wide and not very tall. But if you draw a picture that only takes up a small area in the middle of the paper, it will be taller than it is wide.

Now people who make movies and TV shows have to think about what aspect ratio they want to use because it can affect how people see the picture. Some movies are really wide like a rectangle and that's because they want you to see as much of what's happening as possible. But other shows might be taller and more square because that's the best way to show what's happening.

So remember, aspect ratio just means how wide and tall a picture is, and it can change depending on what the people making the picture want you to see.
